(2002)

charlotte was an installation commissioned for the Living with the Genie Conference held at Columbia University from March 5th-7th, 2002.

Eight laser pointers were arranged to shoot beams across the entrance to the Low Library rotunda. Eight photo sensors on the other side of the entrance detected the presence or absence of the beams. When someone walked through the entrance, breaking one of the beams, charlotte would light an LED on its face and send a MIDI message to a sampler, which played the sound corresponding to the broken beam. The sounds played were chosen by the conference producer, Peter Fox.
